"I can't do this," he muttered through clenched teeth.
"What did you say, Mitch?"
"I can't do this!" he yelled.
"But I want you."
"I can't do it."
"Come on, Mitch. No one will ever know."
No one will ever know. No one will ever know. No one will ever know. He walked slowly towards her. No one will ever know. (p. 161) hi feelings for his wife and the relationship with his girl. (p.161)
To his wife:
"I missed you," he said with conviction. He bear-hugged her for a good  minute. He kissed her neck and tasted the sweetness of her perfume. And then the girl returned. You piece of scum, why didn't you run?" (p.177)

This set of quotes indicate internal conflict, they show the emotional turmoil which Mitch is going through, with his feelings for his wife and the relationship he has with the girl. The conflict is showing how guilty he feels, by saying that he can not be affectionate to his wife. His wife is begging him for closness, love and affection; for that physical connection a husband and wife should have. Mitch rationalizes his guilt by saying no one will ever know, he becomes weak and allows himself to hug and kiss his wife without being honest about it, the affair he is having with the girl.

Mitch leaned on the limo and nervously opened the envelope. There were four photographs, black and white, eight by ten, very clear. On the beach. The girl.
"Oh my god! Who took these" Mitch yelled at him.
"What difference does it make? It's you, ain't it?"
There was no doubt about who it was. He ripped the photographs into small pieces and threw them in DeVasher's direction.
"We got plenty at the office," DeVasher said calmly. "Bunch of them. We don't want to use them, but one more little conversation with Mr. Tarrance or any other Fibbie and we'll mail them to your wife (p. 259).

The sescond set of quotes indicate and describe how the external conflict will take place between Mitch and the Firm, especially in the last quote. DeVasher, the security officer for the firm is threatening to blackmail him in order to stop Mitch from having any further conversations with the FBI. The blackmailing technique and the production of the photographs have made the protagonist nervous but has not deterred him from being honest or stopped him in continuing to expose the firm. Even though Mitch experiences many emotional feelings about the photos, he remains resolved in his determination to combat criminals. The significance of the conflict that Mitch is experiencing with the firm will ultimately turn out for the better as the FBI will be able to close down the firm for criminal activities.

“Mitch, aware of the Firm’s connection to Morolto crime family of Chicago, looks for a way out. “
Soon after joining the firm Mitch begins to learn that there is something wrong. Once he realises that no one leaves the firm alive, he tries to help the FBI so he can survive.

“Mitch – a cheater or a committed husband?”
After being out on holiday's the Morolto family set him up with a girl so they can take control over Mitch to stop making him talk to the FBI. Mitch is torn between his feeling for his wife and the connection he has with this girl.

“Mitch – deals with the FBI to bring down the firm”
The FBI notices that Mitch is at the firm in the newspaper and rush to him to convince him to work with them in gathering evidence against the firm.

“DeVasher, shows incriminating pictures to Mitch to keep him quiet.”
The Morolto family sends in a girl to set Mitch up. While Mitch and the girl are together, there is a photographer taking pictures, that are used to blackmail Mitch and his wife.

“Mitch – starts to print out files from the Firm.”
Mitch wants to survive, so he prints off files that he has found to give to the FBI. He is hoping that the files are enough evidence to shut down the firm.
