First Quote

In the first quote the author is using personification - treating the building as a human

"He pampered the building, indulged it, coddled it, each year adding another layer of luxury to his landmark." (p.17)

The author here is using the building to describe what the main character is feeling in his career as a lawyer. The main character is becoming more disillusioned and wants to protect himself from the crooks and the mafia. The layers of luxury and security that he adds to the building every year were all in preparation for what he would need once he exposed "The Firm"

Second quote

"When you were in law school you had some noble idea of what a lawyer should be. A champion of individual rights; a defender of the constitution; a guardian of the oppressed; an advocate for your clients principles. Then after you practice for six months you realize we're nothing but hired guns. Mouthpieces for sale to the highest bidder, available to any body, any crook, any sleazebag with enough money to pay our outrageous fees. Nothing shocks you. It's supposed to be an honorable profession, but you'll meet so many crooked lawyers you'll want to quit and find an honest job."

This quote displays a cynical tone. Throughout the novel Mitchell McDeere, the main character becomes increasingly frustrated with the dis-honest situations he has to face every day, causing him to become increasingly cynical himself. He detests "The Firm' for what it represents and wants to change his situation in order to live a more honest life.
